I’m not even going to talk about the people and media outlets are already jumping at this and saying how horrible it is because it is against his principles to appoint senators. I think the PM addressed this well today speaking at Laval University.
To paraphrase the PM, “When the provinces elect senators-in-waiting, I will appoint them. Right now, that isn’t the case, except in Alberta.”
As of right now, Alberta is the only province in Canada to pass legislation for allowing senate elections, and the only province to have an elected Senator in the Senate, thanks to Stephen Harper during the last round of appointments.
So as an onlooker, and a proponent for an elected Senate, I take the position that the best way to get an elected senate, is to have Senators in place that WILL NOT stand in the way of any federal legislation that will make Senate elections legal on a national level! To me, that’s just common sense folks.

We shouldn’t have elected Senators until we change the constitution. Particularly, the distribution of seats. All provinces should have equal representation. If we bring in elections and liberal areas are overrepresented we’ll end up with the same problem we have right now.
In Alberta even after our senators in waiting had been elected the lieberal government went ahead and appointed their lieberal sock puppet clown Tommy Banks.
Good thing you rubes are so easily gulled.
